West Palm Beach, Fla. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team dropped a pair of Sun Conference matches here Saturday to Ave Maria University and Keiser University.
In a tri-match featuring the three schools, the Mariners fell 3-2 to Ave Maria and 3-1 to host Keiser as they played back-to-back matches.
The losses dropped the Mariners to 4-9 for the season and 3-3 in the conference. They had won three matches in a row.
In the five-set loss to the Gyrenes (2-11, 2-4), the Mariners lost the first two sets by 25-23 scores before winning the next two frames by 25-22 and 25-17 to force a deciding fifth set. But, Ave Maria would prevail in the fifth set 15-12 to take the match.
Coastal Georgia finished with 68 kills and 33 errors in 162 attacks to hit .216 for the contest. Kyra White had 18 kills in 30 chances, Alexis Downey followed with 14 and Jessica Brown and Azure Werner totaled 10 each.
Ashley Kot dished out 57 assists.
The Mariners had 10 service aces but also committed 16 errors on serve.
Laney Green led the defensive effort in the back row with 23 digs.
Ave Maria won while having 44 kills including 12 by Savannah Stanton.
The Gyrenes also had 10 aces but only four errors.
Against Keiser (6-13, 3-3), the Mariners split the first two sets with the Seahawks, losing 25-23 and winning 25-18. But, Keiser would take the next two sets by two points – 25-23 and 29-27 – to claim the win.
The Mariners finished with 59 kills and 33 errors in 174 swings, hitting .149 for the match. Ehize Omoghibo led the team with 17 kills, White added 14 and Werner notched 11.
Kott assisted on 45 of the team's kills.
The Mariners had five aces but also had 10 errors.
Green again led the defense with 28 digs, Kot had 12 and Madie Bunge finished with 10.
Downey had three solo blocks and White notched two.
Keiser finished with 43 kills, getting 17 from Abbie Seward.
Four different players had double-digit dig totals including Seward who led the team with 16.
The Mariners will play at Warner on Tuesday.
