Columbia, Ky. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set contest Saturday afternoon against Campbellsville (Ky.), falling 3-2 to the Tigers at the Southeastern Challenge.
Leading the match 2-1, the Mariners lost the fourth set 25-12 to the Tigers who then overcame a 6-0 deficit to take the deciding fifth set 18-16 and claim the victory in the closely-contested matchup between teams who entered the season receiving votes for the national poll.
Coastal Georgia lost the opening set 25-22 before taking the second and third sets by 25-21 and 25-23.
With the loss, the Mariners fell to 1-5 for the season. They opened this weekend's tournament with a victory over Milligan on Friday afternoon before falling to No. 5 and tournament host Lindsey Wilson Friday evening in their second tourney contest.
The Mariners will close out play here Saturday night with a match against No. 19 Georgetown (Ky.), which Coastal Georgia toppled last year in pool play at the final site of the NAIA national championship for their first victory at the final site.
Campbellsville finished this weekend's tournament with a perfect 4-0 record and is now 6-0 on the young season. The Tigers defeated Mobile, Martin Methodist and Webber International by 3-0 scores in their other three matches here.
Coastal Georgia finished Saturday's contest with 58 kills, getting a combined 39 from Ehize Omoghibo and Kyra White. Omoghibo led the offensive attack with 22 kills in 52 swings and finished hitting .288. White banged out 17 kills in 30 attempts and hit .467.
Ashley Kot tallied 45 assists while also recording 13 digs as the team's starting setter.
The Mariners had 25 attack errors.
The Tigers recorded 55 kills while committing 29 attack errors. They also had two players swing for double-digit kill totals. Katie Johnson led the team with 18 while Maria Coelho finished with 14.
Maliyah Tela had 47 assists for the Tigers.
Four players finished with double-digit digs for the Tigers including Jessie Pendleton who had a match-high 25.
Laney Green led the Mariners in the back row with 21 digs.
Coastal Georgia finished with 14 total blocks to nine by the Tigers. Omoghibo had two solos and nine assists for the Mariners while Alexis Downey assisted on eight blocks and White assisted on four.
Key stats in the match were also service aces and errors. The Mariners committed 19 service errors to 10 by the Tigers. The Mariners had two aces while the Tigers recorded eight.
