Brunswick, Ga. – Soon after opening preseason camp on Monday morning, the College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team was tabbed the favorite to win The Sun Conference this season.
The Mariners, who will be competing in the league for the first time this fall after changing conferences in the offseason, were ranked first in The Sun Conference Preseason Volleyball Coaches' Poll which was released early Monday by the conference office.
Coastal Georgia enters the new league after winning three straight tournament championships in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
The Mariners received five of eight possible first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Coastal Georgia returns eight players from the 2016 team, which advanced to the final site of the NAIA National Championship, including two-time All-SSAC middle blocker Kyra White.
Webber International, which was the regular season and tournament Sun Conference champion in 2016 finished second to the Mariners by five points, picking up two first-place votes. Under the direction of new head coach Lindsey Martin, the Warriors are coming off of a 28-4 campaign.
St. Thomas picked up the final two first-place votes, finishing third. The Bobcats were the top attacking team in The Sun Conference in 2016, averaging 13.1 kills per set.
Warner rounded out the top four, finishing five points behind St. Thomas.
Keiser, Southeastern, Ave Maria, Johnson & Wales and Florida Memorial finished the rankings.
