Montgomery, Ala. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's golf team finds itself in third place following the first 18 holes Monday in the SSAC Men's Golf Championship.

The No. 17-ranked Mariners posted a 292 team score over the first round of the 54-hole championship, leaving them 14 shots behind No. 3 Dalton State which opened with a 278 score to grab the early lead.

Faulkner shot 290 on Monday and is second in the team standings. William Carey shot 293 and is fourth while Mobile shot 294 and is fifth.

The tournament is being contested at the Arrowhead Country Club, a par-71 course which is playing 6,764 yards for this week's event.

For Coastal Georgia, senior Paxton Shuman continued his strong play for the Mariners this spring as he opened with a 1-under-par 70 score that puts him in a tie for fourth in the individual standings.

Shuman trails three Dalton State players – S.M. Lee, P.J Shields and Ben Rebne – who all shot 68 to help take the Roadrunners to the top of the pack with their 6-under team total.

Shuman is tied with Faulkner's Peter Peng who also shot 70 in the first round.

Also for Coastal Georgia, Taylor Guilbeau followed Shuman with a 73 score which put him in a tie for 11th. Seth Sanders shot 74 and is tied for 14th, Harrison Stafford shot 75 and is tied for 21st and Lauri Hacklin shot 76 and is tied for 25th.

The second round is slated for Tuesday with the third and final round set for Wednesday.
