Brunswick, Ga. – In a season full of close calls and narrow defeats, the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team suffered another bitter loss Thursday night when it fell 72-70 to Brewton-Parker in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup at Howard Coffin Gym.

The loss to the Barons ended any chance Coastal Georgia had of getting the final spot in the upcoming Southern States Athletic Conference tournament.

With three league games left next week to close out the regular season, the Mariners (4-22 overall, 1-16 league) now trail both Brewton-Parker and Mobile by three games in the conference standings. Even if they won all three games next week and finished in a three-way tie with both squads, the Mariners would be the odd team out in a tiebreaker as they lost both regular-season meetings with the Rams and Barons (8-15, 4-13).

In a game in which the Barons held the largest lead by either team – seven points early in the first half – the teams were tied 64-64 with 3:01 to play after a basket by Haylen Washington who was fouled as he scored.

Coastal Georgia would go in front on Washington's ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play, but the lead didn't last long.

The Barons would score on a pair of three-point shots on their next two offensive trips to move ahead 70-65 just inside the final two minutes.

The Mariners would score on their next possession on a bucket by Brandon Martin that made it 70-67 with just over a minute to go.

After getting consecutive defensive stops, however, the Mariners couldn't capitalize. They missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity and then misfired on a three-point attempt to tie the game, forcing them to foul the Barons with now just 14 seconds left.

Jakari Bush would hit two foul shots to put the Barons up 72-67 in the closing seconds, virtually sinking the Mariners in the process.

Martin did score on a three-pointer for the Mariners prior to the closing horn to account for the final score.

For the game, Brewton-Parker's Jamelle Lanier, who was 6-for-8 from three-point land, led all scorers with 18 points. Dava'dre Parker followed with 13 for the Barons.

Coastal Georgia got 14 points and nine rebounds from Martin while Hayley Washington and DeAundray Rhett finished with 12 points each.

The Mariners are scheduled to visit Faulkner in Montgomery, Ala., on Monday.
